Throughout my education I've learned to adopt a journalistic approach to writing.
I took my first journalism course as a freshman in high school and continued that interest for the remaining three years. I became a staff writer and later editor. I spent a considerable amount of time writing, editing, designing, and gathering other matirial for my section. The experience taught me a lot about deadlines, working under pressure, and the joy that comes when your content is published.
In college I chose to study communication and writing was a key element to nearly all of my courses. I also spent a little time as a staff member of The Scroll, BYU-Idaho's student newspaper.

Dear Mr. Janes,
Perhaps you have heard of fancy stretch limo companies around Las Vegas. They advertise that they can take any car, cut it in half and extend it to become a limousine. The process and the cars themselves grab the attention of nearly everyone and especially anyone interested in an automotive customizing. That’s why I think your readers would especially enjoy hearing about Jon Holst.
Jon Holst did the same thing to his diesel Ford F350 out of his small shop in Ucon Idaho. Twenty-three years old, Jon has worked a lot on auto body projects and customization. None of his projects compare to his latest, his six doors, extended, and lifted, custom F350.
I understand that your company has recently started a new magazine, Dieseltech. This kind of customization project would be exactly what your readers would be interested in. With all of the different modifications that Jon has done to this truck and the shear novelty of the truck is sure to grab any reader’s attention. I can provide you an article in full detail about the truck, with pictures and quotes from Jon.
I am in my final year of the Communication program at BYU-Idaho. I have four years of High School journalism experience, collegiate speech and communication contest recognitions, and experience in writing, photography, videography, web building and more. I grew up on a farm and have spent a considerable amount of my life in rural Idaho and I know I can find a way to reach your readers.
Thank you very much for considering my article. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon (I have included a SASE for your reply).
Sincerely,
Bryan Williams
Title: Query Letter
Date: June 4, 2007
Description: In my Advanced Media Writing course, taught by Professor Bennett, I learned more than just better techniques on writing. Part of the course was to learn more about the writing industry. In this excercise we practiced writing a query letter as a freelance writer for a magazine company.
